The Majestic River Crossing in Masai Mara – The Great Wildebeest Migration

The migration of The Great Wildebeest spreading over Masai Mara National Park is quite a magnificent sight to behold. Luring a lot of people for a Kenya Camping Safari and experiencing this wondrous process. The Great Wildebeest Migration starts with Kenya to Tanzanian national parks of Masai Mara to Serengeti National Park respectively. This circular movement occurs in search of water and more grazing land. As these Wildebeest begin their migration trip, there is always commotion of other predatory animals as well, waiting to prey upon the weakest of the herd.

The Reason behind this migratory behavior:

The great wildebeest move all year round to find lush green grass to gaze upon and water to quench their thirst. This circular movement of the great wildebeest is observed year upon year. Although there is a certain change in the pattern every year. However, with a local guide who has ample knowledge about the site, one can surely catch a glimpse of this majestic sight making it the highlight of your Kenya Camping Safari.

The extraordinary factor in this migration:

The most astonishing aspect of this migration is how these large animals cross the rivers in a queue, without pushing other animals. This kind of discipline is not what you’d expect from animals in the open wilderness. This spectacular sight is something to look forward to in your Kenya Camping Safari.

Watch out for other animals:

While these wildebeests are migrating you can very well catch a glimpse of other herbivores who are migrating along in search of food. Along with herbivores, carnivores are very much prevalent to prey upon the weak links of the herd.

The best time to observe this migration:

The movement of the great wildebeest happens all year round.

  • November – December: This movement of Wildebeest starts from November to early December. Usually, after the rainy season passes. The animal then moves towards a southeastward march to Serengeti.
  • April: As April approaches the movement towards the north begins again. This northwards march continues throughout summers.
  • July- September: By July or August, the herd reaches the Mara River.  July- September is the peak time to cross over the Mara River. This can be a great time to plan a Kenya Camping Safari.

However, there might be any change of pattern due to the availability of lush green elsewhere. This is why you need the proper guidance of a local guide who is well versed in the area.

In conclusion, the great wildebeest migration is not just awaited phenomenon because of its size but also with the discipline it occurs. While this movement one can not just see the great wildebeest but also other animals like crocodiles and lions are looming over to prey upon the weakest member of the herd. Thus making this event a hugely awaited one, where you can see all kinds of species all at once. Try not to miss out on this natural event when planning for your Kenya camping safari.
